During a dilated eye exam, our doctors will take images of the interior of your eye known as the retina. (A normal retina is shown on the left.) This allows our doctors to see early signs of eye disease, such as a nevus or freckle (shown in top right picture), leaking blood vessels in diabetic retinopathy, a blocked blood vessel or stroke in the eye (shown in bottom right picture), a change in the optic nerve in glaucoma, or deposits at the macula in macular degeneration. By comparing your individual retinal pictures from year to year, our doctors can detect changes much earlier and recommend the appropriate treatment to help preserve your vision!
